Saint Urcize

Highlight • Settlement

The village counts for its attractions among the "Small Cities of Character". The ubiquitous granite frame blends wonderfully with the natural setting of the Aubrac high plateau which hosts it.

Saint-Urcize stands at an altitude of 1,000 meters on basalt rock overlooking the Hère and Bès valleys, on the Aubrac plateau. The old houses, the narrow streets, the small squares with fountains, the remains of fortifications and the ruins of the old fort give the city its medieval character and attest to its very ancient origins.

The gray slate and schist roofs blend with the remarkable 12th century Romanesque church whose combed bell tower dominates the town. Its small bell dating from 1583 is said to be one of the oldest in France, and its ambulatory guarantees that the city was a stage in the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in the Middle Ages.

Aveyron village with narrow streets and slate roof houses. It is the capital of Aubrac but also of the famous Laguiole knives.

Do not miss the statue of the ox, in the center of the place du fairground, where a market is held every Saturday morning.

Aubrac

Highlight • Other

Village perched 1,300 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Aubrac Regional Natural Park, of which it is the seat. Essential passage of the Way of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, it is at the crossroads of the departments of Aveyron, Lozère and Cantal. It is advisable to savor an aligot there!

Notre-Dame-des-Pauvres Church, Aubrac

Highlight • Religious Site

Where treeless pastures dominate Aubrac today, a dark forest used to cover the land. For pilgrims the way through the mountains was very dangerous. Robbers hid in the woods, fog and blizzards threatened the hiker. The Flandrian Count Adalard escaped on his pilgrimage to Santiago here barely death. Around 1120 he founded the hospice Notre-Dame-des-Pauvres of Aubrac. The monastic community dedicated itself to the care of the poor and the sick and, above all, passing pilgrims.
The monastic community grew rapidly, donations and legacies increased wealth. Accordingly, the desire of others was aroused to incorporate the monastery. In 1700, a fire destroyed large parts of the plant. The French Revolution did the rest. Today, only the church and the Tour of the Anglais have been preserved from their heyday.
