Halle d'Egreville

Highlight • Monument

This very well preserved hall in a style typical of the region sits enthroned on the main square of Egreville next to the massive church.
There are only a few of this architecture in France, it remains one of the most remarkable with that of Milly-la Forêt.
The construction of the hall, which initially had 8 bays and no south gable, dates back to the end of the 15th century. It followed a first work destroyed by the fire of the village in 1282. The frame whose base is in oak initially rested on the ground which, by humidity, damaged the wood.
In 1666, it was necessary to remove a span to build the south gable in masonry, to install transverse and longitudinal oblique reinforcements and to rest the 28 feet on stone bases, again replaced in 1769.

Diant Castle

Built on the banks of the Orvanne, the castle was originally a feudal mansion built in the 10th or 11th century. Louis IX and Queen Blanche of Castile stayed there several times. It has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries.
Private property that cannot be visited.

Saint Martin Church of Montmachoux

Highlight • Religious Site

At the end of a small hill, at the edge of a wood, the Saint Martin church dominates the village of Montmachoux and the surrounding plain. The village was for a long time located on the royal border (in the 10th and 11th centuries) at the marches of Burgundy and bore the name “Saint-Michel” or “Monte-Michao” which would become Montmachoux.
Built in sandstone, the Church of Saint-Martin has been able to retain all of its authenticity over time. A restoration program, funded in particular by the Heritage Foundation, is underway in order to save this medieval building, which is fairly simple in structure but of good size.
The small cemetery on its side offers a panoramic view of the Gâtinais plain and notably includes the graves of 3 Senegalese skirmishers.

Do not hesitate to leave the main road a little to make a small detour in the streets of this borough classified among the villages of character of Seine et Marne. The old houses line the streets organized in quadrilaterals around the church square, the old washhouse and a 12th century mill.

Church and Castle of Paley

Highlight • Other

The notable characteristic of this 12th century church (in my humble opinion) resides in this inscription engraved on the frontispiece of the entry "The French people recognize the Supreme Being and the immortality of the soul". This inscription dates from 1794 at a time when the old religions were suppressed in favor of the cult of Reason (fall 1793-spring 1794) then the cult of the Supreme Being (spring 1794-summer 1794), and finally Theophilanthropy .
In the spring of 1794, Robespierre and his colleagues from the Committee of Public Safety had the Hébertists successively arrested, then Danton and the Indulgents, measures followed by the condemnation and execution of the leaders of the two "factions". He then contributes to putting an end to the policy of dechristianization and makes vote, as rapporteur, the decree of 18 Floréal Year II, by which "the French people recognize the existence of the supreme being and the immortality of the soul. ".
A very small number of churches throughout France have kept track of this period.
