Sacro Monte of Orta

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sacro Monte di Orta San Giulio is located on a hill overlooking the city center. It was built at the end of the sixteenth century at the behest of the bishop Carlo Bascapè. There are twenty chapels, in each of which an important moment in the life of St. Francis is told.

From this panoramic point you have an incredible view of Lake Orta and the small island of San Giulio, characterized by the wonderful basilica. The elegant palaces on the sides house the cloistered nuns.

Church of Saints Francis and Nicholas

Highlight • Religious Site

Chiesa di San Nicolao, Sacro Monte di Orta
The church of San Nicolao. On the top of the Selva di San Nicolao, since the beginning of Christianity, there stood the church of the same name, the oldest parish in the entire Eastern Riviera. According to tradition, it was founded around the tenth century by monks dependent on the Abbey of St. Gall.
The church has undergone several transformations. The simulacrum, in Byzantine style, is carved in wood and dates back to the ninth century.
The paintings on the sides of the main altar and the balustrade are by Cantalupi and depict some Franciscan saints. The altarpieces on the sides of the church are worth seeing: on the right, the Busca of the Virgin and Child in S. Felice da Cantalcino (ca. 1640), on the left, St. Francis receiving the Child from the hands of the Madonna, painted by Rocca around 1640.
The pronaos was built in 1926. The monks did not always live on the Holy Mountain, as they were expelled for the first time in 1810 at the behest of Napoleon; in 1817 the Friars Minor returned there and were expelled by the Piedmontese government in 1866. The monastery was then used as a residence.
In 1896, however, at the behest of some benefactors, the hospice was built next to the church, which is now inhabited by religious.

Palace of the Community

Highlight • Historical Site

Palazotto della Comunitá, (former Town Hall 1582)
Located in Piazza Motta, the heart of the town of Orta, it was built in 1582. Here the General Council (composed of the deputies of the episcopal fief) exercised both legislative and executive power and can therefore be considered a symbol of the long self-government that characterized the Community of the Riviera.
An external staircase connects the large porch to the large single room on the first floor.
The external walls of the building are decorated with the coats of arms of some of the bishops of Novara who succeeded each other in the government of the region; the façade to the right of the entrance bears the coat of arms of Orla accompanied by the inscription "Hortus Conclusus" to underline both the geographical position and the autonomy of the Riviera.
That the palace was the seat of the legislative and executive powers is proven by the painting of a "Woman representing Justice" above the door, on which two angels can be seen carrying swords and scales on either side.

Mario Motta Square, Orta San Giulio

Highlight • Settlement

The Piazza Mario Motta, Orta San Giulio
The Piazza Mario Motta: The atmospheric square in the center of Orta was named after the Italian freedom fighter Mario Motta, who fought in the Piedmontese resistance. The square itself is a prime example of Italian architecture.
Colorful facades on the east side, opposite the lake with a row of chestnut trees (formerly elms). The small Palazzo della Comunità with a foundation of picturesque arcades (popular as a wedding backdrop) is unmissable. Shops, bakeries, restaurants, bars and boat docks are spread around the entire square.
On the north side, the alley Salita di Motta leads up to the church of Maria Trost and the Sacro Monte, other alleys - almost star-shaped - open up other parts of Orta.

Orta San Giulio

Highlight • Settlement

The history of the city of Orta is intimately linked to that of the territory of Lake Orta. Orta has always been the main center of the Community of the Riviera, an autonomous consortium of municipalities that existed from the Middle Ages to the mid-eighteenth century. (Wikipedia)
