Zeedijk Oostduinkerke

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The Zeeduik Oostduinkerke is the beach promenade of Oostduinkerke, which is closed to motor vehicle traffic (*except suppliers). Also here along the promenade restaurants and beach bars. The pedestrian zone is by far not as crowded with tourists as, for example, Ostend. Children can drive around in their pedal cars on the relatively short promenade (approx. 500 m). Compared to the coastal towns of Nieuwpoort or Ostend, things are a little quieter here.

View of the Dunes and Beach

Highlight • Viewpoint

Enjoy the beautiful views from Oostduinkerke's sandy beach. At low tide, the beach is a full kilometer wide and stretches all the way to Dunkirk in France. Near this highlight, you can admire the sculpture "De Haring" (The Herring) on the beach.

The fishermen with their Belgian draft horses can be seen from afar on the beach. The horses pull huge nets, with two large thatched baskets on their backs, through the surf - until they are up to their necks in the water.

The unusual tradition of the shrimp and crab fishermen lives on to this day. Curiously enough, the tradition of horse fishing, which at times seems phlegmatic, goes back just as long as fast sand yachting on the sandy runway, which is hardened by low tide and can be up to 400 meters wide.

In the months of March, April, May, September, October and November, the horse fishermen follow the rhythm of nature and fish in the Schipgatduinen (St. André) and in Groenendijk. In July and August they show their traditional skills almost every day in the center of Oostduinkerke-Bad.

View of the North Sea at De Panne

Highlight • Viewpoint

The view of the North Sea at De Panne offers an impressive panorama of the vast sandy beaches and the rolling water. Here you can enjoy wide dunes, untouched nature and the fresh sea air, with a view all the way to the French border on clear days. The quiet coastline and the wide view make it an ideal place to stand still for a while and enjoy the pure, Belgian coastal landscape.

Ode to the shrimp fishermen

Highlight • Monument

In Oostduinkerke you can learn about the life of fishermen back then. This tradition is still maintained here because it is the only place in Europe where crabs are still caught on horseback. At low tide you can see the fishermen at work. And the crabs are not just caught. Cooking demonstrations are regularly held and you can also buy crabs.

Oostduinkerke Beach

Highlight • Beach

This vastness! The beach of Oostduinkerke - a district of Koksijde - is attractive in every season. In winter it is particularly attractive because your eye can see so far and it is almost deserted.

Very classic walk along the beach and fairway. Direction of the route totally unimportant! Back or forth with the coastal tram. There are no rise meters !! Error in the GPS.
