Plan Tureluur Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

Until the 1990s, this was agricultural land, but it was returned to nature. Today, the area is characterized by ponds, mudflats, and grasslands. In short: a paradise for birds!

De Zuidkaap Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Climbing this watchtower is literally a highlight. Once at the top you look far over the Prunje and the Oosterschelde.

The watchtower was financed from a donation to nature conservation from the estate of nature photographer and nature lover Rykel ten Kate (1919-1992).
The memorial column further on is a tribute to Rykel.

The memorial is a tribute to Rykel ten Kate (1912-1992).

Rykel was a well-known nature photographer and nature lover from Zierikzee.
He played an important role in nature conservation on Schouwen-Duiveland and was one of the founders of the Nature and Bird Watch Schouwen-Duiveland.

After his death he left a legacy to nature conservation. This money has been used
to finance the lookout tower “De Zuidkaap” of Staatsbosbeheer, located further on.

The memorial column has the inscription: "With appreciation for Rykel ten Kate 1912-1992, nature lover and photographer of Schouwen-Duiveland" and was placed on 01-04-2007.

The nature reserve was created between 1991 and 2014 because a lot of the tidal area outside the dikes had been lost due to the arrival of the Delta Works.

The redshank, an endangered meadow bird, became the figurehead of the new nature on Schouwen-Duiveland (hence the name: “Plan Redshank”).
The redshank was chosen as a symbol because this snipe makes its call in and around the Oosterschelde for a large part of the year.

To create the nature reserve, agricultural land was purchased and returned to nature. The whole covers more than 1,000 hectares and is part of the Oosterschelde National Park.

A (quite) cold but beautiful walk over the dikes, through the polders and past a piece of Dutch history. References to the flood disaster of 1953 can be found everywhere.

I can't really recommend the tour with a dog. It's just too asphalt-heavy and there's almost no shade along the way or the possibility for the dog to cool down. At least with the weather like today.
It's definitely a nice route by bike.
