The Kattesas in Nieuwpoort, also known as the Oude Veurnesas, is a historic lock that played a crucial role during the First World War. During the night of 26 to 27 October 1914, the very first attempt was made here to flood the IJzervlakte in a controlled manner, as a defence strategy against the advancing German troops. This action was carried out by Karel Cogge, Captain Thys and several soldiers, among others. Although the first attempt via the Kattesas did not yield enough water, it formed the impetus for a successful inundation a few days later via the Noordvaart. This flooding proved decisive: it stopped the German advance and marked the beginning of the trench warfare on the IJzer. The Kattesas was later recognised as a protected monument, not only for its technical value, but also for its symbolic significance as part of the Belgian resistance.
