Cyclist Bridge Over the Scheldt (Escanaffles–Avelgem)

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

This separate cycle path (two directions) takes you from the Escanaffkes (across the Scheldt) to Avelgem. This with a new bicycle bridge. Very car-free.

This segment connects perfectly with the rest of the Guldensporenpad which basically takes you from Marke 20 km far through Kortrijk, Zwevegem and Avelgem to Escanafles. This is largely car-free. Feel free to view the other segments in this series.

This climb to St Aubert takes you through beautiful landscapes. Some steep parts and a hairpin bend provide a challenge, but there are also moments where you can catch your breath.

Giant Wooden Table and Chairs

Highlight • Structure

This original, enormous artwork consists of a table and 10 robinia wood chairs. These pieces of furniture enhance the illusion of oversized space and transport the viewer back to childhood. It's one of the artistic works you can discover along the Arty trail, which runs between Roubaix (FR) and Tournai (BE) along the Roubaix and Scheldt Canal (parcoursarty.com).

Kortrijk–Bossuit Canal

Highlight • River

Due to a breach in the wall near Ellestraat (approximately halfway along the canal), the canal completely emptied in 1959. The damage was later linked to the digging work of muskrats.

Scheldt River Path at Outrijve

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Scheldt originates in Northern France north of Saint-Quentin, approximately 95 meters above sea level. It is a small spring that only forms a stream in its first kilometers. As it flows, the stream is fed by other side streams and grows into a real river, eventually flowing into the North Sea as a mighty stream.

The Scheldt can be divided into three zones. From its source to the tidal lock of Merelbeke, near Ghent, it is called the Upper Scheldt.

In several places the Upper Scheldt forms the border between Wallonia and Flanders. Over the centuries, weirs and locks were built to improve the navigability of the Upper Scheldt. On the banks of the Upper Scheldt you will discover the typical lakes, industrial areas and many cut-off Scheldt arms. Despite all the adjustments, the Scheldt Valley has still retained much of its original character.
