Description
The Old 7-Mile-Bridge 🚴 🏃 🛼 loop from Knights Key is an easy 1.0-mile (1.6 km) route with a negligible 1 foot (0 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 23 minutes to complete. This flat, paved path is a high-payoff win for anyone looking for unique Florida Keys scenery and a chance to walk across history, perfect for exercise walkers, runners, cyclists, and sightseers.
What to expect on Old 7-Mile-Bridge 🚴 🏃 🛼 loop from Knights Key
Walking or cycling this trail feels like gliding over the ocean itself, with the freshly repaved surface stretching out over the clear, turquoise Atlantic water. You'll have constant views of the Gulf of Mexico converging with the Atlantic, and the adjacent modern Seven Mile Bridge provides a striking contrast. Keep your eyes peeled for marine life like rays, sea turtles, and even sharks in the waters below, alongside an abundance of birds such as pelicans and magnificent frigatebirds. The path is flat and easy, but the lack of shade means you'll feel the Florida sun.
Planning your visit
This trail is entirely exposed, so bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and use a hat, especially given the Florida heat. While the loop itself is short, the full accessible section of the Old 7-Mile Bridge extends 2.2 miles to Pigeon Key, making for a 4.4-mile round trip if you choose to go that far. There are no water fountains or restrooms along the span. If you plan to explore Pigeon Key, be aware there is an admission fee to access the island. Sunrises and sunsets are particularly picturesque from the bridge, making early morning or late afternoon ideal times to visit.
