Sand was piled up on the southern edge of the valley, on which the village centers of Escanaffles and Ruien later emerged. The northern edge, where Avelgem is located, was created after clay was deposited in curved soils or "meersen". The northern and southern valley edges in the Avelgem Scheldemeersen are almost the only places within the valley where habitation is present.
When the Scheldt was straightened for the last time last century, several 'coupures' or cut-off arms were created with stagnant or weakly flowing water. The 'Coupure Deweer' is a wonderful example of this. In the still water of the meander, fish, plants and other organisms maintain a delicate balance. The Saint Martin's Church

The oldest mentions of a church building date from the year 1269 or 1286. At that time, the building was located on the territory of the Lordship of Avelgem.
The first church was a Romanesque church with a square tower. In the year 1485, the church was destroyed by Ghent rebels. About a hundred years later, around 1580, during the Geuzen period, the church almost completely burned down.
At the end of the 16th century, it was rebuilt, this time in Gothic style. It was consecrated in 1620. Due to various wars, the church fell into disrepair. The later French Revolution accelerated this.
Between 1866 and 1869, a new neo-Gothic church was built next to the church building, after which the old building was demolished between 1866 and 1873.
During the First World War, in October 1918, the church was bombed flat by the Germans. The rebuilt church was finally consecrated in 1928. The Sint-Martinuskerk was recently renovated (2017-2020).
