Porta Altinate

Highlight • Monument

The city gate stood on the first stone pile of the Roman Altinate bridge (no longer visible) that crossed the Naviglio Interno [inner city canal], which was filled in the 1960s to create the street now called Via Riviera dei Ponti Romani. The gate, the bridge and the surrounding neighborhood (Contrada Altinate) all took their names from the Roman Via Emilia-Altinate that connected Roman Bologna with the town of Altino, an important point on the route to Aquileia.
Today, the distinctive tower structure of Porta Altinate marks the entrance to Piazza Garibaldi. Possibly dating from the twelfth century, the structure was seized and burned in 1256 by the crusaders fighting Ezzelino III da Romano (an event commemorated on a plaque with an inscription by Carlo Leoni); it was subsequently rebuilt in 1286. The gate is a kind of triumphal arch of stone, with an outer arch decorated in imitation of such ancient Roman structures. Above that arch is a brick tower, the upper part of which had already disappeared at the end of the seventeenth century. To the right of the gate is the Monument to Alvisa Pisani, governor of Padua from 1686-1687 and then Doge of Venice. This Baroque-style monument was commissioned by the Collegio degli Studenti Artist dello Studio Patavino [the student association of the University of Padua who studied philosophy and medicine]; the Lion of St. Mark here was in fact carved during the period of Napoleonic rule (when the Republic of Venice no longer existed).
The short stretches of wall on either side of the gate are the remains of the common city walls that were spared by demolition works carried out in the 1960s-70s.

The main attractions in Padua are Giotto's magnificent, not-to-be-missed frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel (fully restored between 1999 and 2001) and the revered pilgrimage site of the eight-domed Basilica of Sant'Antonio di Padova, with its important equestrian statue by Donatello standing in the piazza in front of it.
