Lake Ledro

Lago di Ledro lies at an altitude of 655 m above sea level between Lake Garda and Lake Idro at the eastern end of the Valle di Ledro. The lake has a surface area of 2,187 km². The deepest point is 47 m below the water surface.

Lake Ledro is of glacial origin and after the last ice age it formed a single lake area with Lake Ampola at the southwestern end of the valley, filling the Ledro Valley from Molina di Ledro to the Ampola Pass. The lake bed was carved out by a branch of the Adige Glacier, in which water was able to collect, aided by the remains of moraines at the eastern end near Molina di Ledro and by alluvial fans of the Rio Visi at the western end. The waters coming from the side valleys of the Ledro Valley eventually led to the silting up of the original continuous lake bed through sedimentation and separated the two lakes.
