Santa Croce Lake

Highlight • Lake

Lake Santa Croce, the largest in the province of Belluno and the second in Veneto, is a natural lake formed by a landslide that closed the Val Lapisina blocking the descent of the Piave river towards Vittorio Veneto and creating the Sella del Fadalto.

The lake of Santa Croce was formed due to a landslide that blocked the course of the Piave river towards Vittorio Veneto. This lake is the second largest lake in the Veneto region and is surrounded by the Alpago and Nevegal mountains. Used in the past for the transport of timber to the south, today the lake is a favorite destination above all for windsurfers and kitesurfers for the strength and constancy of the thermal wind that regularly strengthens in the afternoon. Cyclists and pedestrians can instead enjoy a route that covers almost the entire eastern side of the lake and allows access to some free and equipped beaches.

Nice little lake circuit. At the beginning it's a good kilometer along a gravel path by the water. Easy to ride with "normal" bikes. From then on it's always along the road, which was OK because there's almost always a small shoulder and there wasn't much traffic. A little tip. If you don't want to do too much uphill training, …
