Willem Adriaan bought the manor of Zeist and the dilapidated medieval castle from the States of Utrecht. He started building a pleasure garden with the collaboration of the architects Jacob Roman, a Leiden city architect and later stadtholder architect, and Daniël Marot, a French Huguenot of international fame.

The main entrance consists of a gate in Renaissance style with the text "Anno 1620" above it. Above this is a statue of David with the severed head of Goliath in his left hand. Furthermore, the coat of arms of the De Geer family can be seen, the background consists of diamonds (heraldic: ren) with the saying Non Sans Cause (Not without cause) underneath.
