Fremont Bridge, Seattle

Highlight • Bridge

The Safeco Bridge, also known as the Alaskan Way Viaduct, was once a vital elevated roadway in Seattle, running along the waterfront and connecting downtown to southern neighborhoods and the Port of Seattle. Built in the 1950s, it was part of Seattle’s post-war growth. However, after the 2001 earthquake brought about safety concerns, the viaduct was replaced by the State Route 99 Tunnel in 2019. Today the area has been redeveloped into a vibrant public space with parks and great views.

From this spot, you get fantastic views over the harbor and of Lake Union. One unique feature here is the abundance of floating houses right on the water. Railroad Park is a great place to run to when exploring the area.

Fremont Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Careful when riding North-to-South. If you want to continue on the Chesiahud Lake Union Loop trail, you need to use the long three-stage crosswalk across 4th Avenue BEFORE crossing Nickerson St/Westlake Avenue. The trail branches off the sidewalk to the East side of Westlake Ave. If you cross after that intersection, you will need to cross back again to get on the trail rather than the street.
Riding South-to-North, beware of cars cutting you off by turning right at the "Waiting for the Interurban" statue. They don't seem to look out for cyclists right there.
