Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Jean-de-Losne lies at the junction of three major waterways: the Saône River, which flows towards the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea; the Burgundy Canal, which flows towards the Seine and the Paris Basin; and the Rhine-Rhône Canal, which flows towards the Rhine and Northern and Eastern Europe.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the smallest municipalities in France: a total of 0.60 km², of which 0.36 km² is land and the rest water.

Where Chalon's central Grande Rue becomes Rue du Port it crosses the historic Rue du Châtelet/rue Saint-Vincent, dominated by half-timbered façades, with an elegant Jesus holding the cross sculptured into the corner.

Canal du Centre

Highlight (Segment) • River

The Canal du Centre was designed to connect the two major rivers, the Loire and the Saône, for commercial purposes. It links Chalon-sur-Saône, a town on the banks of the Saône, to Digoin, on the banks of the Loire. It is 112 kilometers long. This waterway provided Burgundy with an invaluable asset at the time, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The first stone was laid in 1784. The first barge sailed on the canal in 1791, in the midst of the French Revolution.

Canal du Centre at Chagny

Highlight • River

Excellent paved flat bike trail along the historic 1793 Canal du Centre, connecting at Chalon-sur-Saône the transeuropean EuroVelo 6 route (coming from the Black Sea) with the ViaRhôna route and leads via Digoin to the Loire Valley trails and Nantes with its intersection of EuroVelo 1 Vélodyssée along the Atlantic coast.
The canal now only serves for recreational boating.

Saône River

Highlight • River

The banks of the Saône offer a very pleasant setting for cycling. Today, the towpaths are perfectly suited for two-wheelers, as seen here.

Verdun-Ciel

Highlight • Settlement

Pleasant town at the confluence of the two rivers Doubs and Saône, with a lively farmers market on the central square on Thursdays. The canal du Rhône au Rhin, which follows the Doubs from the Rhine river, already leaves the Doubs a long way earlier and joins the larger Saône some 40 km upstream from here. Likewise, from Saint-Jean-de-Losne to the South the trail follows the canal along the much wider stream of the Saône. The EuroVelo 6 route crosses much larger bridges when weaving between the left and right banks from here on south.

We rolled into Chalon sur Saonne early in the morning. The best thing about the city is its sonorous name.
Then we cycled along the river in beautiful light.
The route literally flew by. This was due to both the strong tailwind and the intense conversation with a long-distance cyclist from the USA.
