Lucca City Walls

Highlight • Monument

Lucca's city wall has enclosed the old city center since 180 BC. The current wall, built between 1504 and 1645, served as a defense against attacks from nearby Florence. The only use of the wall as a defense line was against the waters of the River Serchio on November 18, 1812. As one of the best-preserved examples of a 16th-century European fortification, the wall remains an impressive symbol of Lucca's rich history.

Lucca City Walls

Highlight • Monument

Built between the 1500s and 1600s, the walls of Lucca are, after those of Nicosia, the second largest example in Europe of walls built according to the principles of "modern style" fortification that have been completely preserved in a large city.

Porta Santa Maria, Lucca

Highlight • Monument

De Porta Santa Maria is a northern entrance gate in the walls of Lucca. It was built between 1549 and 1592 as part of the Renaissance walls, and was designed by architect Ginese Bresciani and built by Michelangelo Gabrielli. The gate is dedicated to the Virgin Mary - the marble statue of the Madonna is located in a niche outside the entrance. Originally, the Porta Santa Maria had only one opening, but later the two side openings were made, above which are statues each representing a panther (the symbol of the city of Lucca). Under the central arch there are two frescoes, on one side the archangel Gabriel and on the other side the Madonna, representing the Annunciation. In the middle of the internal facade there is a marble bas-relief depicting Saint Peter with the inscription "Libertas" below, the old motto of the city.
