Mendel Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The winding Mendel Pass road, with a maximum gradient of around seven percent, features a total of fifteen hairpin bends. A drive up the Mendel Pass was, and still is, a special experience. Breathtaking views of the vineyards of the Überetsch region and the Dolomite mountains are guaranteed. Unfortunately, these views aren't fully appreciated when driving, so it was decided to close the Mendel Pass road to traffic for one day, allowing cyclists and walkers to enjoy the pass at a leisurely pace. Refreshments will be provided for participants along the route!

Cycle path Überetsch: Bolzano - Eppan - Caldaro
The cycle route connects the city of Bozen with the wine-growing region between Eppan and Caldaro and with Lake Caldaro
From Bozen, the route leads south along the Eisack to the junction "Meran - Eppan". Here the path follows the Etsch a few km to the north, then it goes to Eppan/Kaltern over a half-timbered bridge. Here, below Sigmundskron Castle, the path begins to climb slightly.
The Überetsch railway used to run at this point. The bike path winds up through the wine country between Cornaiano and Frangarto, passes through a few tunnels and finally, after an underpass, reaches St. Michael. From the former St. Michael Eppan train station, continue southwards, the path runs parallel to the road to the "Kreuzweg" settlement.

Tunnel on the Überetsch Railway Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

For those who normally only cycle over bridges, the tunnel ride is a real highlight. It's great that these routes have been prepared for cyclists. This tunnel was developed as part of the conversion of an old railway line into a cycle path. The route is one of the most popular cycle paths in the region, as it offers a picturesque and safe connection through the Überetsch area.

Visible from afar, Sigmundskron Castle sits enthroned on the rock. Today, the historic walls house Reinhold Messner's MMM Firmian, the headquarters of a fascinating museum project. It's well worth a visit!

Adige Cycle Path near Bolzano

Highlight • Cycleway

The cycle path is very beautiful and it is very idyllic to cycle past the many apple trees between the mountains. It's great to get to Meran. Great that there is this bike path.
In the dark, however, it is unfortunately not illuminated, which is not a problem if you have good light yourself. However, I would not recommend driving here without light or with only sparse light, as it goes downhill right next to the cycle path, which means that there is a risk of accidents in poor visibility.

So be sure to think of lights if it is possible to be on the road longer and only drive back when it is dark!

It was a wonderful day of biking. The Mendel Pass was closed to motor vehicles all day Saturday. Great! This makes cycling fun. This should be introduced in Switzerland too.😁🙃🤣

The Penegal (Italian Monte Penegal, 1737 m) is a mountain in the Mendola ridge in southern South Tyrol on the border with Trentino. A narrow and winding toll-free road leads from the Mendola Pass over 3.9 kilometers with a vertical drop of 358 meters to the summit.

Showing Translation

Today the Mendel pass road was closed to traffic. A great experience, especially since the weather played along despite snow up to about 2000m and a strong north wind. There are always fantastic views of the Dolomites, Lake Caldaro and Bolzano.
