The Church of San Domenico was built in 1470 as a mausoleum of the Aragona-Tagliavia family. Of notable value are the chapel of the main altar and the chapel of the choir, decorated by Antonio Ferraro da Giuliana and his son Orazio. Among the most important works inside the church are: the marble tomb of Prince Carlo d'Aragona Tagliavia, the Sarcophagus of Ferdinando d'Aragona Tagliavia (1549) and the marble statue of the Madonna di Loreto (1489).

Gentile was born in 1875 to Giovanni, a pharmacist, and Teresa Curti, daughter of a notary. He lived his childhood in Campobello di Mazara and attended the Ximenes high school in Trapani. In 1895 he won the competition for four internal positions at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, where he enrolled in the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. He has as teachers, among others, Alessandro D'Ancona (professor of literature, linked to the historical method and positivism and liberal ideas), Amedeo Crivellucci (professor of history) and Donato Jaia (professor of philosophy, Hegelian follower of Spaventa), who greatly influenced his philosophical thought as an adult.
