The name is linked to an ancient legend that tells of a snake that every night came up from the cliff to drink the oil that kept the lighthouse lantern lit. At one point the inhabitants of Otranto ambushed him, killing him and the snake's companion, knowing it, climbed the tower, wrapped herself around and hugged it until it destroyed it.
Another legend tells that a few years before the capture of Otranto in 1480 the Saracens had headed towards the Salento city to sack it, but even on that occasion the snake, having drunk the oil, had turned off the lighthouse. Pirates without reference points passed by and attacked nearby Brindisi.

Bauxite Lake, Otranto

The discovery of the deposit and its exploitation date back to 1940. Following its abandonment 30 years later, the numerous water infiltrations due to the underground aquifers have allowed the formation of a small lake with a very particular color.
All this creates a suggestive environment immersed in the typical Mediterranean scrub with shades ranging from emerald green to intense red. Today the area, completely re-naturalized, hosts luxuriant pine forests and paths and is used for agricultural-pastoral activities as well as a destination for walking and outdoor activities.

Cippano Farmhouse

Masseria Cippano is a fortified farmhouse dating back to the second half of the 16th century, located near Otranto on a path parallel to the coast road that leads to Porto Badisco, at the height of the Sant'Emiliano tower. The farm consists of a 15-metre high structure with an external staircase, buttresses, machicolations and loopholes, and is an interesting visit as an example of rural and military architecture, linked to the defense of the territory from Turkish invasions.
