The right corner of rest and relaxation after the first part of the walk from Milan.
Watch out for the nervous swans and especially not to break your breath from the climb to return to altitude!

Monumental Cemetery of Crespi d'Adda

Highlight • Historical Site

The cemetery designed by Gaetano Moretti has a rectangular planimetric shape and is located south of the village near the confluence of the Brembo with the Adda, reachable through an artery over 300 meters long, continuing the main avenue.

The complex is set in an agricultural environment of cultivated countryside: the whole plot to the right of the avenue and the cemetery, now uncultivated undergrowth, was once cultivated with vineyards and orchards while on the opposite side there was cereal cultivation.

The entrance takes place by means of a wrought iron gate positioned centrally on the north side, right in front of a majestic pyramid-shaped funeral monument that forms the backdrop of the cemetery.

The Crespi mausoleum consists of three galleries, a central staircase and an altar dedicated to the SS. Redeemer and to Saints Onorato and Simplicio; in it the space was prepared for fifty burials and it is the only property that remains today the property of its founders (the rest of the cemetery would be passed on January 1, 1931 to the company S.T.I. - Italian Textile Establishments - which will sell it in 1965 to the Municipality of Capriate San Gervasio).

The church of Crespi d'Adda is a perfect re-edition of the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Piazza di Busto Arsizio, the original city of the Crespi family.

The magazine "L'Edilizia Moderna" of October 1894 reports that "the reproduction of the sacred building of Busto Arsizio in Crespi d'Adda was carried out scrupulously both with respect to the overall size and with respect to the most minute architectural and decorative details".

It was built between 1891 and 1893, with a square plan with a base in Adda strain and culminates in a large octagonal dome, surrounded, on the external part, by a loggia refined by marble columns.

The rich decorations of the internal walls almost faithfully follow those of the Busto church, and reach their peak in the dome, in the representation of a starry sky on a clear night.

The only significant difference compared to the original Sanctuary of Busto lies in having kept "the floor level raised by about seventy centimeters above the level of the surrounding square, with the addition of a plinth made of local stump and a staircase in marble of Verona at the church door".
