Cannara village center

Highlight • Settlement

Cannara is a small village located in the heart of the Umbrian plain, on the banks of the Topino river. From here you can admire the slopes of Mount Subasio to the east, with Assisi on one side and Spello on the other. To the west you can see the top of Monte Le Cinque Querce. Cannara owes its name to the reeds that once grew in the swampy areas of the Topino.

Historic Center of Bevagna

Highlight • Historical Site

Wandering the narrow streets of Bevagna is like traveling back in time. The fortified historic center is an open-air museum showcasing the characteristic architectural styles of central Italy: Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque. The citadel's charm is enhanced by the turquoise waters of the Timia (or Clitunno) River, which almost make it resemble an island. At the end of June, the citadel leaps back in time with the Mercato delle Gaite medieval festival, a truly unique experience.

The cycle path is well designed, it's a shame about the lack of periodic maintenance; in the stretch along the Timia the route is also used by motor vehicles, albeit with little traffic

The Basilica of S. Maria degli Angeli was built between 1569 and 1679 at the behest of Pope St. Pius V in order to guard the chapels of the Porziuncola, the Transito and the Rose Garden and other places made sacred by the memory of St. Francis. The original project by Galeazzo Alessi is characterized by a rigorous structural simplicity, conforming to the Franciscan ideal of poverty.

This cycling tour is a classic: from Assisi over Spello to Foligno. The way back via Bevagna follows new cycle paths through the fields and older ones along the water. Sometimes the bicycle road stops abruptly, and here and there work is still being done.
