Old Airfield becomes heathland

Highlight • Natural

The old airfield was built in 1960. The strip was 800 meters long and 25 meters wide. In 2009 the old airport was demolished again. After demolition, the original landscape will be restored. The 'New nature' quickly recovers. Rare plants and animals develop here in the rendered nature. Fauna and flora are allowed to grow and flourish here in peace.

Here, too, a turning basin is a local widening of the canal. Ships longer than the width of the waterway can turn here. The name is derived from the movement that a boat makes with this movement.

Kievitsheide Nature Reserve

Highlight • Forest

This is rather a small nature reserve, but from this forest you can walk to various other nature reserves. Here are some from around: Duivelskuil, Luysterborg, Plomp-poel erg, Blakheide, Epelaar, Kievitsheide, De Huffelen and Velderheide 👍

Kievitsheide

Highlight • Forest

Kievitsheide was once part of the Abtsheide. The Kievitsheide nature reserve is a remnant of the historic "Kievit Heyde". This vast heathland stretched over the territory of the municipalities of Beerse, Merksplas and Rijkevorsel. The historic heathland area was excavated for clay extraction. The rest of the heathland was planted with coniferous woods for the mining industry.

Ideal location to become one with what is happening in your field of view. Just enjoy how the fauna and flora are restored in this former strip of the old airport.

December 4, 2024,Duivelshol – vlonderpad Eksterheide rondtocht vanuit Sint-Jozef-Rijkevorsel
In addition to my (almost) daily walks around home and work, I try to take a nature walk once a week. On this gray day I chose this walk via komoot. Around half past twelve a watery sun came through. The walk was mostly unpaved through mainly coniferous forest. The paths were easy to walk but very muddy towards the …

Nice walk through the Antwerp Kempen. Not busy at all, too bad that dogs have to be on a leash during the entire route. There is a dog playground halfway to run around.

The wet ground and high water level played tricks on us, but with some ingenuity we were able to complete the walk without wet feet.

Beautiful forest walk along fens and heathland. Largely unpaved.
Eksterheide is a vast nature reserve between Beerse and Rijkevorsel. There used to be a private airport here. The area is in full development.
Departure is currently at the bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Dessel - Schoten canal on the side of the center of St. Jozef.
