King Albert I Monument and the Ganzepoot Locks

Highlight • Monument

The Nieuwpoort lock complex is better known as 'De Ganzepoot'. The name refers to the shape of the entire complex. This place played a crucial role during the First World War. In October 1914, the opening of the locks caused the flooding of the IJzervlakte. This put an end to the advance of the German troops. With the help of the locks, the IJzervlakte remained flooded throughout the war.
At the end of 2014, the Westfront Nieuwpoort Visitor Center opened here, where you can learn more about the role of the lock complex and the flooding during WWI.

Old Marina

Highlight • Structure

Upstream from the fishing port of Nieuwpoort is the “Euro Marina”. The three yacht clubs manage around 2,000 berths. Nieuwpoort thus has the largest marina in Northern Europe.

The Hannecartbos was created on an area of grasslands and dune fields.
Not all 48 hectares of the area were forested. There is grassland on the northeastern edge, as well as on the southern edge, where a small zone of early medieval kopps dunes also occurs. Here and there the forest still shows park-like features, such as a wild lane with the trees neatly arranged. Some of the hedgerows that bordered the dune fields are also still recognizable. A watercourse runs diagonally through the area.
After purchase by the government and protection as a nature reserve, a drastic restoration program was drawn up for the forest. For example, dying trees are cut down on an area of six hectares to restore the original grasslands. The Shetland ponies are grazed in defined areas. The stream is being cleaned up and its course is regulated by weirs.

Nature Reserve

The Doornpanne, together with De Hoge Blekker and De Schipgatduinen, forms a 240 hectare dune massif. The central part is owned by Aquaduin and functions as a water extraction area. Other parts have the status of Flemish Nature Reserve and are managed by the Flemish Community.
The area includes diverse dune types, from drifting dunes and dune grasslands to densely vegetated pans and fixed inner dunes.

The core of the dune complex consists of a wide depression (panne), the vegetation of which forms a mosaic of forest, shrubs and open dune vegetation.

There is a belt of drifting dunes around it, including the highest dune top on the Flemish coast (the Hoge Blekker 33 m).

Novus Portus - Nieuwpoort Marina

Highlight • Structure

The construction of the Novus Portus dock between 1974 and 1979 made the Nieuwpoort marina the largest in Northern Europe with approximately 2,000 berths. The dock provides space for VVW Nieuwpoort and the Water Sports Circle of the Air Force (WSKLuM). They take care of the management of the marina. Future expansion plans include approximately 700 additional berths, a new bridge with the city center and the realization of a residential waterfront.

Delvoye's 'Caterpillar series' dates from 2002. With this collection of remarkable construction machines, Delvoye forges a timeless melting point between the past and the present. It used to take centuries to build a Gothic cathedral, while now a spectacular building is built in no time. The contrast between the sturdy and rough appearance of the corten steel construction and the refined Gothic patterns is astonishing.
