Ixelles Ponds

Highlight • Lake

The ponds of Ixelles are probably the best known ponds of the Maelbeek. Located between the Abbaye de la Cambre and Place Flagey, there were originally four of them, serving as fishponds but also for the production of ice from the 19th century.

As the district experienced strong urbanization at the end of the 19th century, two of the four ponds were filled in to form the current Place Flagey and Place Sainte-Croix.

Bois de la Cambre

Highlight • Forest

This 123-hectare park, a veritable green lung in a highly urbanized area, serves as a sort of "outstretched hand" from the Sonian Forest to the city center. It is now classified as a Natura 2000 area (since 2004). The Robinson chalet at its center, isolated on its island, completes the romantic postcard setting.

This hilly area offers some very picturesque viewpoints. On our bikes, we'll recall the existence of a velodrome, now defunct, inaugurated in 1893. It's worth noting that in 1906, with the advent of the automobile, the mayor restricted car and motorcycle traffic to only a portion of the road network. This usage is disputed to this day!

Vuylbeek Nature Reserve

Highlight • Forest

The wet valley of the Vuylbeek reserve runs parallel to the Drowned Children Valley and is an integral part of the Sonian Forest. The atmosphere of these two valleys is completely different, but that is what makes them so interesting. With rare habitats and a rich diversity of plants and animals, this small valley is truly a beautiful gem.

Sonian Forest

Highlight • Forest

Just 10 kilometres from the Grand Place in Brussels, you will find one of the largest forest areas in Flanders. The vast Sonian Forest unites the three regions of our country, is 4,421 hectares in size, has trees that are more than 200 years old and is home to many animals. Walk between the stately beech trees in the vast Sonian Forest and you almost forget that the bustling Brussels is nearby.

View of Terhulpen Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Château de La Hulpe is located in the heart of a vast domain classified as an exceptional heritage of Wallonia.
This beautiful castle, based on the architecture of French castles and once owned by Count Solvay, will delight the most discerning of customers.
On the ground floor there is a succession of both intimate and stately salons that together form a harmonious whole.
