St. Marien Church Flensburg

Highlight • Religious Site

The Catholic Church of St. Mary's Sorrowful Mother in Flensburg was built between 1898 and 1900 in the neo-Gothic style according to plans by the architect Heinrich Flügel. The Roman Catholic parish church is one of the cultural monuments in Flensburg's city center.

Heiliggeistkirche Flensburg

Highlight • Religious Site

The Helligåndskirken, or Holy Spirit Church, was built in 1386 for the Holy Spirit Hospital, which had existed since the beginning of the 14th century. After the Reformation, the hospital was relocated to the former Franciscan monastery. Danish-language services have been held in the church since 1588. The church was donated to Dansk Kirke i Sydslesvig in 1997 and is now the main church of the Danish minority in South Schleswig.

The church is shaped like a small, asymmetrical stepped hall. Today, access is via a pointed arch portal on the east side. The gable facing the Great Street was decorated with an ornate volute gable in 1718/19 and received an eight-sided lantern in 1761.

The original Renaissance pulpit from 1602, from the workshop of Heinrich Ringering, was moved to the newly built St. Jürgen Church in 1907. The current pulpit was donated by the Danish congregation in Chicago in 1927. Two votive ships from the 19th century depict the three-masted ships "Tordenskjold" and "Dania."

Lancet windows on the south and east sides provide light to the church. The windows and portal on the north side were walled up around 1880 when a residential and commercial building was built nearby.

Holm Street Historic Buildings

Highlight • Historical Site

Yes, the two houses are beautiful to look at and in their size they are quite impressive next to the other buildings.

But to be honest, I wouldn't go to the trouble of going downtown just because of the two houses, because they aren't that special either.

Citizens' Association

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bürgerverein is located in a courtyard in the Flensburg pedestrian zone.

Historical Background
Behind the founding on May 12, 1835, were citizens with sympathy for the modern, liberal thinking of the time.

But the association quickly became the preferred meeting place for Flensburg's Danish-loyal bourgeoisie. In the 1850s, a large part of the city's wealthy citizens and many Danish officials joined the association, and it reached a membership of over 400. King Christian VIII was a guest several times, and King Frederik VII and Countess Danner repeatedly participated in the association's events.

After the Danish defeat in 1864, cooler winds blew. But the Bürgerverein maintained its place as a meeting point for the solid Danish-oriented bourgeoisie of the city and the surrounding area.

The Bürgerverein in the 21st Century
Countless meetings, lectures, and parties have brought together members from Flensburg, the rest of Southern Schleswig, and from the north over the years. Cross-border connections have always been very important to the Bürgerverein.

Now, in the 21st century, the Bürgerverein is intact. The association's property in the middle of the Flensburg pedestrian zone has been newly restored and is in top condition, and the restaurant Borgerforeningen Flensburg is known for its good cuisine.
