St. Leonhard's Chapel, Bad Schachen (Lindau)

Highlight • Religious Site

Schachener Straße - corner Enzisweilerstraße; open with luck;

The little St. Leonhards Chapel has already experienced a lot:
The first time it is mentioned in 1482, when at a fishing festival 10 people are said to have drowned. However, we read about their door 1485, but that probably refers to a renovation or renovation. It belonged to St. Stephan (Lindau Island) and perhaps served as a castle chapel for the opposite seat of power. With the arrival of the Reformation in Lindau in 1528, the three-storey church was profaned from rough quarry stones. Originally hung three bells in the tower, of which at least the main bell was cast in the year 1638 by the Lindau bell foundry family Ernst.

In 1828, the nave burned down and a Royal Foundation Administrator and Architect wanted to demolish the tower, but that did not allow the peasantry. After all, Saint Leonard is the patron saint of prisoners and dear cattle. Around 1900, the tower was given a new extension and until 1988, the former chapel served as a fire station. Since 1995, a development association cares for St. Leonhard, which is still in the possession of the Protestant community of St. Stephen - Christuskirche. On request, the chapel can be used for ecclesiastical and secular purposes.

There is not much to see inside. The eye-catcher in the tower is a pillar of the Lindau glass artist Oliver Schaugg (born 1965) from the year 2001. The design of the glass column wants to honor the patron saint of the chapel, the saint Leonhard - with reference to our present time. As the patron saint of prisoners, St. Leonhard has always been the bearer of hope for those in great need in captivity. Imprisonment means not only being locked up in a prison, but also being trapped in the mind. How many constraints and norms are we subject to today or do we think we have to fulfill?

The 4 sides of the glass column represent a path, a development that shows a change of consciousness over different stages. Pictorially this is expressed in the abstraction of the chain towards a symbol of hope.

On one of the two bridges, which connects the island of Lindau with the mainland. On the railway bridge there is a bicycle path separated from the footpath, on which on summer days however a lot of tourist traffic prevails.
