The Heimbach reservoir is not actually a dam, but a so-called compensation basin. It serves to compensate for the fluctuations in the water level caused by the intermittent operation of the peak current power plants in the Urft and Rurtalsperre. These two hydropower plants usually only produce electricity when larger demand peaks are expected or measured in the general high-voltage network, which is usually the case in the mornings of working days. In the rest of the time the machines are idle and therefore no water inevitably flows into the reservoir. The usable space of the reservoir is therefore filled with water within a few hours when the power plants are in operation. Then the storage volume is dosed and drained in such a way that the underflow of the river bed of the Rur is continuously exposed to an amount of water that meets the ecological requirements of the flowing water and the requirements of other requirements. View of Hengebach Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very nice castle located above Heimbach.
The castle was first mentioned in 1106 as the property of the lords of Hengebach. The castle later fell to the Count of Jülich. In 1687 the castle fell victim to a fire. The restorations started in 1904 were destroyed in the Second World War and later resumed. The keep, the remains of the palace and the castle walls have been preserved from the original castle. The castle was rebuilt in 2009 and has been used as an art academy ever since.

In addition to numerous sights, Heimbach also offers a variety of leisure activities; i.a. a modern outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, boat and kayak rental, children's playground and football fields, nature trails, mini golf and 150 km of marked hiking trails. In the summer months, spa concerts and folk events take place in the spa gardens and at Hengebach Castle. ... "

April 3, 2024,zum SternenBlick Eifel / Heimbach
In Heimbach, the starry sky is really easy to see due to low air pollution and fewer artificial light sources, says Mayor Jochen Weiler.
The plans included clearly visible markings and a lounger so that the starry sky can be observed without getting a stiff neck. An expert from Heimbach will soon be explaining the constellations to visitors on cloudless …

How had taken over this nice nice round from Gerda. By a very nice coincidence we had met Gerda in Hasenfeld and we were invited to a very nice coffee round at Gerda and Walter's home.
Thank you for the nice Sunday afternoon.

This summer, Heimbach children have once again transformed the jungle path into a wonderful adventure trail with around 30 small elf houses, wind chimes and much more.
The reactions of many hikers are very positive and praiseworthy. Families with children in particular enjoy hiking along this entertaining hiking trail, although it is not suitable for strollers.

Today I decided to go for a hike in Heimbach again. Fortunately, the temperatures have calmed down a bit, making hiking significantly more pleasant for me again.

The route from Heimbach via the Dschungelpfad (Jungle Path) to the Art Nouveau hydroelectric power plant and back is one of the most beautiful short hikes in the Rureifel for me. It combines …
