The old route of the Dortmund-Ems canal between Datteln and Olfen is a structural masterpiece. Opened in 1899, the canal overpass of the Lippe is particularly striking. Highly recommended.

The Alte Fahrt is a disused branch of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. With the growing ship traffic on the canal, various side arms had to be built as early as 1929, just 30 years after it was opened. Larger ships in particular were able to use side arms of the canal and thus avoid each other. Many years later the main canal was widened at the crucial points and the so-called second voyages were dismantled or separated from the main canal. Many of the former tributaries are now closed biotopes and invite you to go on discovery tours on foot or by bike.

The canal bridge over the Stever led the Alte Fahrt of the Dortmund-Ems-Canal (DEK) in the north of Olfen over the Stever.

The bridge is one of three historic bridges of the Alte Fahrt of the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal. Further south, the DEK crosses the Schiefe Brücke the east road in Olfen and with another canal bridge the Lippe.

The canal transfer was designed in the style of historicism under the direction of the Royal Prussian Chief Building Director Karl Hinckeldeyn and executed in 1894. It is very similar to the other two bridges, as the faces of all three buildings are made of Ruhr sandstone.

At the bridge start the Steverauen, a renatured recreational area with half-grazing rear cattle and Konik horses, which extends to the Füchtelner mill.

Bridge trough and Old Ride are no longer filled with water in this area. They were included in the hiking and biking trails around Olfen.

Idyllic view of the Stever. It is always worthwhile to make a short stop here. When vehicles come, however, it gets pretty tight on the narrow bridge ;-)

Old Zechen Railway Path

Highlight • Cycleway

This railway line was completely renovated in summer 2021. The rough gravel road has become a worthy asphalted route. Definitely an asset to any bike tour.

March 24, 2025,Tag 1 von Dortmund nach Lüdinghausen
After arriving in Dortmund by public transport, we set off north from the main train station. Our route took us along the Dortmund-Ems Canal for most of the way. Unfortunately, we had a flat tire and had to fix it before reaching our first destination of the day, Lüdinghausen, in the afternoon.
