Royal College of the Immaculate Conception of Cabra was founded in 1679 when the testamentary provisions of its founder Luis de Aguilar y Eslava were fulfilled . For the execution of such a noble and philanthropic objective, he left an annual income of two thousand ducats and sufficient assets to build a building with a chapel and other necessary facilities for teaching and student residence.

In 1685 King Charles II granted it the Royal Decree of Erection and in 1692 it began its academic activity. Its first Constitutions date from 1700. From 1777 to 1823, the Royal College of Higher Studies of Cabra was incorporated into the Imperial University of Granada , a privilege granted by King Charles III through a Royal Provision; improving its presence and doubling the number of students. But shortly after, the College was faced with the most difficult and sad period in its history. Dismissed by laws referring to public education, it was closed for five years. On the verge of the sale of its assets, the Board of Trustees fought until it was reopened in 1827. Fortunately, the Minister of Public Instruction, ignoring the interested requests for its disappearance, contributed to the issuance of a Royal Order in 1828 by which it would become a College of Humanities .

In 1846 the Royal College was incorporated into the University of Seville , and the following year, 1847, a Royal Order of Isabel II would definitively transform it into an Institute of Secondary Education . In this way, the city of Cabra managed to have one of the first institutes in Spain. In 1877, Alfonso XII declared it a Provincial Institute , incorporating the schools of the neighboring towns.
Among the different collections, objects and exhibition works that the Aguilar and Slava Museum offers stand out those referred to the Natural Sciences to accommodate pieces, objects and remains supplied by Botany, Zoology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Geology or Paleontology.

The Natural History collections have formed the substantial part of a centenary teaching museum and whose funds were elaborated with numerous acquisitions while receiving important donations from pupils, alumni and personalities linked to the city and the center.

Fuente del Río

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Fuente del Río in Cabra, is a picturesque natural park considered the origin of the Río Cabra. The park combines the natural beauty of a karst spring with landscaped gardens and a diverse tree landscape. It was declared a “Sitio de Interés Natural” in 1929 and today offers recreational areas and picnic areas for visitors. The spring rises at the foot of the Sierra de Cabra, an area with high rainfall and calcareous rock that leads to the formation of such karst springs. The water flows through a series of waterfalls and artificial springs and supplies the entire municipality.

The Fuente del Río is part of the “Ruta del Agua” in the Subbética Cordobesa and offers a harmonious interplay of nature and human design. The park is a popular place for locals and visitors who want to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of this unique place.

A visit to the Fuente del Río offers the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the region and explore the origins of the Río Cabra.

Another railway station that has been converted into a restaurant. A great area to stop and take some photos of the old steam locomotives that used to circulate on this route.
