Fort Battice

Highlight • Historical Site

Fort Battice is a Belgian fortification built after 1934 near the town of the same name, about 20 km east of Liège. The fort was part of the outer ring of fortifications around Liège (French: Position Fortifiée de Liège – PFL 1) and covered the eastern front of the city. It secured several road and railway lines. Eight other forts were within range of its artillery (Wikipedia).

"Line 38" is the old railway line that crosses the Land of Herve and once connected Chênée with Plombières. Now it is integrated in the RAVeL network and reserved for walkers, joggers, riders and mountain bikers.
She has since turned into one of the most beautiful green roads in Belgium.

Plembières Railway Path

Highlight • Cycleway

You can comfortably cycle for hours in the shade on this former railway route. Without any particular gradients and sharp curves, as is usual on railway lines.

Laschet Tunnel cutting

Highlight • Structure

The southern head of the tunnel was blown up on August 3, 1914 by the Belgian army to prevent the passage of the Germans with their material. This was done to protect the fortresses near Liège, but the last fortresses fell on August 16, 1914. On May 10, 1940, the Belgian army mined the tunnel again and large parts of it fell. In 1941, the Germans replaced the tunnel with an open trench with a bridge, which lasted until 1952.

Fully paved and gentle inclines as this is an old railway line. Beautiful wide views towards the north, with the hills of Henri-Chapelle on the horizon.

You can do the tour, but it's not a must. There is little to no information along the way. There are hardly any nice rest areas. The views are very beautiful. The friendly interaction with pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders is also pleasant. If you want to cover a lot of kilometers, it's ideal.
