Sisteron Citadel

Highlight • Other

You are standing on the road leading up to the citadel. Don't miss the chance to visit this fortress.

This eminently strategic site was an essential crossing point. This impregnable bastion, built during the reign of Henry IV, was remodeled by Vauban a few centuries later.

From up here, you'll have a remarkable view of the Durance River and the Sisteron Gorge. This geological wonder is known as the gateway to Provence. It cuts into a rocky ridge called the Rocher de la Baume, which dates back to the Upper Jurassic period. The deformation of this sedimentary rock is particularly impressive here. It is due to the formation of the Alps 70 million years ago.

Provence served on a platter

Highlight • Other

A quite exceptional panorama on a very little-frequented road. I highly recommend this route between the Col d'Hysope and Sisteron via the Col de Fontbelle
