Church of the Assumption in Navarrete

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1523 Bishop Alonso de Castilla gave permission to start building the church. The old church (Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María), which was near the castle, was demolished and its remains were moved to the site of the new church. The stonemasons Juan Vallejo and Hernando de Minenza from Burgos were commissioned to work on the sanctuary. In 1576 the Church of Calahorra was asked for financial support so that the work could be carried out. Inside is an imposing altarpiece, cataloged as one of the largest in the world, which occupies the entire sanctuary of the church. It was executed by Fernando de la Peña over a period of four years (1694-1698) and later remodeled by José de San Juan y Martín in 1713 (Wikipedia).

Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

Highlight • Religious Site

This church is dedicated to the Blessed Mother of God Santa Maria. The addition "de la Asunción" of the patronage refers to the Feast of the Annunciation to Mary (feast day is March 25th, exactly 9 months before Christmas), when the angel of the Lord brought her the message that she was the Son of God - Jesus Christ - to bring into the world.
According to the account in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke, this happened in Nazareth (Israel). There is a large church on the spot where this happened - according to a tradition of around two thousand years - which can therefore be used as the 'origin patronal church' for the title of this church here.
