Old Oak Tree (Natural Monument)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Only the ruined remains of a long-dead tree remain here. Its bare branches still reach toward the sky, and a partial view of the tree's interior reveals that it is largely hollow. Nevertheless, the former giant tree appears to be considered worthy of preservation and has been designated a natural monument.

This rest area with two benches, erected at the intersection of the Lauerzberg, is dominated by a large wooden cross with a framed body. It has a gable roof and the INRI plaque at the top of the longitudinal beam. In front of the cross there is a planted flower box.

The magnificent panoramic view from the Lauerzberg (304 meters) is impressive. A bench invites you to linger and take in the views... Highly recommended 🌳🌲⛰👌🏼📸

Wachendorf Castle

Highlight • Castle

Wachendorf Castle was probably built around 1780 and was rebuilt several times.
Between around 1970 and 1980 it was used as a girls' boarding school.
It then became a Buddhist Education Center and was used as such for a few years.
Some rooms on the ground floor were then used for catering.
In 2014 the castle was extensively renovated. Now the lord of the castle lives in the castle.
Rooms are also rented out for celebrations such as weddings etc. There is now also a registry office at Wachendorf Castle.
The castle itself cannot be visited, but you can view the building from the outside on a tour of the park.

Bruder Klaus Field Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Scheidtweiler couple, who run a farmstead in Wachendorf, commissioned the renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor to build the chapel. Mr. Scheidtweiler had written to the architect, describing his plan out of gratitude for a fulfilled life. He then agreed to it. The building was constructed on scaffolding made of wooden planks, similar to a tipi, using rammed earth. After the construction was completed, the wooden scaffolding was burned from the inside. This created the unique shape of the ceiling, and for the first few years, the smell of burnt wood was always present. The opening hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM during daylight saving time and from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM during standard time.
