Meeting point of the US and Soviet armies at Kreinitz

After Lorenzkirch / Strehla, Kreinitz was the second place where members of the US Army crossed the Elbe - before the official meeting on the Torgau Bridge, which went down in the history books. The people of Kreinitz have been researching for decades to prove that the fraternization of soldiers from both armies took place here on April 25th. In the meantime, it has been documented by film material and many eyewitness accounts: the Elbe was crossed several times near Kreinitz that day - at different points and by two American patrols.
Deficiencies in the radio technology and inaccurate coordinates had led to a great deal of ambiguity regarding the exact locations of the meetings, the time and the people involved.
At noon on April 25, a patrol under Lieutenant Albert Kotzebue was taken by ferry boat to Kreinitz on the east side of the Elbe. Russian and American soldiers hugged each other, and the Americans were presented with bouquets of lilacs. Joe Polowsky, one of Kotzebue's companions, wrote in his report: "We dedicate our lives to the friendship of our two nations - that never again shall such horror befall mankind."

The alleged first meeting in Torgau is only recreated for the history books.
