Fine Lady Upon a White Horse Statue

Highlight • Monument

This statue was funded and erected by the people of Banbury to commemorate the nursery rhyme which has made Banbury famous throughout the English speaking world:
Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross,
To see a Fine Lady upon a White Horse,
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
She shall have music wherever she goes.
This rhyme contains three essential elements: Banbury Cross, the “Cock Horse” and a Fine Lady on a White Horse.
One explanation of the “cock horse” is the children’s hobby horse and Banbury holds a Hobby
Horse Festival in the first weekend of July each year, with a parade of Hobby Horse “beasts”
through the town and Hobby Horse races held in People’s Park.
The raised left arm not only balances the raised right leg of the horse, it represents the creative side of the brain while the right arm holds the reins showing motor control.

St Mary's Church, Banbury

Highlight • Religious Site

This church stands out with its rather unique styles - quite unlike most churches in the country the byzantic influence is obvious. It is clearly visible that the tower was added a bit later.

Wisteria at White Lion Walk

Highlight • Natural

White Lion Walk is a gated courtyard so you may find it locked up in the evenings and sometimes on Sundays as well. Best time to visit is during bookshop opening hours!! The fragrance seems to be strongest when the sun warms the blooms, so best time to visit for the fragrance is on a sunny afternoon.

Banbury Maid Mural

Highlight • Monument

A new piece of Street Art which looks as if it could be the work of Banksy has appeared in Banbury. It's not genuine.

Banbury Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

This building, designed by Edward George Bruton in the Gothic Revival style and built by Chesterman Brothers of Abingdon, was completed in October 1854 and is the fourth town hall building built in Banbury town from 1590 onwards.

The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with three bays facing the junction of the High Street and Market Place; the central section, which projected forward, featured an arched doorway on the ground floor and a balcony with an ogee headed window on the first floor. A clock tower and spire were added in 1860.

The principal room was an assembly hall on the first floor. The building was extended to the south west to create a council chamber in 1891.

The town hall was the headquarters of Banbury Borough Council until the council moved its administration to the mechanics' institute in Marlborough Road in 1930.

Banbury Cross

Highlight • Monument

The thriving market town of Banbury is the most northern in Oxfordshire and has long been an important link with the Midlands. An important stop on the twin arteries of the Oxford Canal and the railway, it makes for a good base for exploring the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as some pleasant walking along the Oxford Canal. The town is also the start point for the Jurassic Way long-distance trail.
