Part of the Transversal Volcanic Axis, the Ajusco - Chichinahutzin mountain range, is a mountain range, whose origin marked the geography of the Basin of Mexico, characterized by the region of its extensive lakes and its transparent Anahuac regions.

Located in the Sierra de las Cruces, the Ajusco mountain range has two peaks: Pico del Águila and Cruz del Marqués. Climbing Las Cruces del Pico del Águila via this short route has its degree of difficulty and risk, like any mountain pass. The steep incline on this route from Abrevadero is steep, making it more difficult for some hikers.

Basic equipment and route knowledge are required. I've seen experienced hikers descend on the wrong paths without any serious consequences, but it will take them longer to get back to the road. There are several wooded rest areas along the route for easy stops if needed.

Currently, it's heavily visited, so it's easy to find someone to help if necessary. It's very important to take your waste with you and respect the area so it can last for generations.

There are some higher-risk passes that should be taken into account. It's best to bring safety equipment. You can connect to the next summit of Ajusco (Cruz del Marqués).

Don't forget that the weather on the mountain can change suddenly, and it's best not to get too confident and bring only the essentials, such as sunscreen, a jacket, water, and food.

The view is spectacular and worth the climb! 🤩

A sunrise there is incredible.

Cruz del Marqués

Highlight • Summit

A lovely four hour all round hike up Cerro Ajusco. A lovely day hike starting at 8.30am from Ajusco pass (from the main road). Sunny weather, great company and views...what more could one ask for? You start through a mixture of nice footpaths through pine forests then get up onto a lovely little ridge outside of the treeline. The last two hundred meters is an easy scramble and then you gain the summit where there is a nice cross. This is Pico del Aguila (the summit of the eagle) and then you drop down another col and gain a secondary summit namely Cruz del Marquez (Cross of the Marquis). You then drop down into the woods again to finish where you started.
