Penha Sanctuary

The plans for the building were drawn up by the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva. Work began on August 6, 1930. Marques da Silva broke with traditional forms of church construction in Portugal and heavily influenced the Art Deco style of the 1930s. Locally sourced granite was used almost exclusively in the construction.

During construction, a fire broke out on February 4, 1939, which destroyed an image of the Immaculate Conception and a carving crowning the main altar. This delayed the completion of the church.

The church was consecrated on September 14, 1947, without the architect present, who had died three months earlier.

Visit the particularly beautiful old town of Guimares and a short climb with the cable car to Penha. But it was too hot to hike, so we took the cable car back down.

...the "Monte da Penha" is Güimares's local mountain...the town is located about 70 km west of Porto...
