Aljafería Palace

Highlight • Castle

The Aljafería Palace was built in the second half of the eleventh century. Its importance lies in the fact that it is the only surviving testimony to a large building of Spanish-Islamic art from the time of the Taifas. After the reconquest of Zaragoza in 1118 by Alfonso I the Warrior, it became the residence of the Christian kings of Aragon. It is now used as the seat of the regional parliament of Aragon.

Expo 2008 Riverside Park

Highlight • Structure

The world exhibition Expo 2008 took place from June 14th to September 14th 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain under the motto "Water and Sustainable Development".

At the Expo there were three themed pavilions on the subject of "water": the bridge pavilion over the river Ebro, the water tower and Europe's largest river aquarium.

The mascot of the Expo 2008 was a drop of water called "Fluvi". The name is derived from the Latin flumen vitae ("river of life").

In order to prepare for the expected rush of around 7.5 million visitors - in fact there were over 5.6 million [2] - the airport was expanded and a tram network was built. Furthermore, a congress center, a high-tech industrial park, a river aquarium, a new city park and a two-story glass bridge over the river Ebro were built.

Even today the area is worth seeing.
