Lake Montedoglio

Highlight • Lake

Lake Montedoglio is an artificial basin built in the 1980s blocking the Tiber river. It is located under the inhabited centers of Baldignano and Madonnuccia, which was built between the years 1979 and 1980 to house the inhabitants of the plain that would have been invaded by the waters. Lake Montedoglio is the largest lake in Tuscany.

Parish Church of Saint Mary at Micciano

Highlight • Religious Site

This beautiful church is located in the hamlet of Motina, in Anghiari. It stands on a hill and can be seen from afar, from the road that leads to the Montedoglio dam and Caprese Michelangelo.

The parish church, documented since 1080, was originally under the patronage of the Counts of Galbino. The donation of the church to the Camaldoli hermitage in 1104, sanctioned by a papal bull of 1198, aroused the open hostility of the bishops of Arezzo who in the XIII century excommunicated the rectors of the parish for their loyalty to the Camaldolese abbots.

In the 13th and 17th centuries the church underwent radical renovations and in 1880 it underwent a radical transformation which reduced the three original naves to a single nave and inserted the protruding transept. Today it is incorporated into a complex of buildings referring to different eras.

Inside there is an interesting canvas with the Madonna and Child enthroned between Saints Peter and Jerome, which can be dated to the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century, the work of an artist active between Tuscany and Umbria close to the young Luca Signorelli.
