The Martesana

Highlight • Cycleway

Martesana Canal, begun by Francesco Sforza in 1475, was designed to transport "millstones, oil presses, spinning mills, and paper mills" along the route.

It rises from the Adda River on its right bank, beneath Trezzo Castle, and reaches Milan at Cascina de' Pomm, ending buried in San Marco.
The Martesana Canal, finally completed in 1496 under the guidance of Ludovico il Moro, flows from Trezzo sull'Adda to Milan for a total length of 38 km.
The route runs alongside the ancient Roman road that crossed the Adda River with two branches: at Vaprio and Cassano. Along with the improvement of agricultural land thanks to irrigation, a notable flourish of noble villas was produced in the Baroque era. The irrigation function of the Martesana Canal marks the clear boundary between the dry plain to the north and the irrigated plain to the south.

The Naviglio Martesana cycle path is a cycle-pedestrian route of about 30-35 km that connects Milan (Cassina de' Pomm/via Melchiorre Gioia area) to Trezzo sull'Adda, running along the canal of the same name. It is a predominantly asphalted, flat, easy route suitable for everyone, which crosses parks, rural areas, and historic noble villas from the 17th-18th centuries.

Nice to run on the canal, 5 minutes from the central station and you are away from the confusion of the city

Martyrs of Freedom Park

Beautiful park along the first stretch of the Martesana canal. Great for children to play, but also to get curious about what happens in the amphitheater.

Martesana is one of the most important historical canals in Lombardy.
About 38 km long, it originates from the Adda River in Trezzo sull'Adda and reaches Milan at Cassina de' Pomm (via Melchiorre Gioia), where it continues underground towards the center.
Designed in the 15th century under Francesco Sforza, it saw the contribution of Leonardo da Vinci for the lock system that connected the canal to the inner ring of the navigli.

Cycle path: Today its banks host a famous cycle path that connects Milan to the Adda, crossing parks and historic villages

The Naviglio della Martesana is perhaps the least known of the ancient artificial canals that connect Milan to the great Lombard rivers. It originates from the Adda river in Concesa, a hamlet of Trezzo d’Adda, crosses the Martesana sub-region, northeast of the capital, and once in the city, it disappears underground via Melchiorre Gioia, at the height of Cassina de’ Pomm, where the yellow building is located.
