View from Hohenhewen

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Hohentwiel is the local mountain of Singen (Singen am Hohentwiel), protrudes prominently into the landscape and is practically unmistakable. From this point the view of him is ideal.

Hohenhewen .. also called Hohenhöwen was a notorious robber knight's nest in the 14th century. The Counts of Lupfen-Stühlingen raided Ulmer merchants.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1050 and is a high medieval castle ruin.
A capture of the castle failed very very long u.a. the second siege during the Swiss War in 1499 was unsuccessful.
During the German Peasant War 1524/25, the castle was also not defeated.
In 1639 Bavarian Bavarian mercenaries besieged the castle during the Thirty Years' War and destroyed it. In the same year she became by marriage in the possession of the Lords of Fürstenberg. A reconstruction was not considered for them and so the ruin was abandoned to decay.

Steep ascent, quite wet in the wet and rooty anyway.

Hohenhewen Castle

Highlight • Castle

A hike to the Hohenhewen castle ruins is worthwhile just for the wonderful view. A viewing platform was built onto the rest of the keep, from which you can see the Hegau mountains, Lake Constance and the Swabian Alb to the north. In good weather and with a clear view, you can also see the Alps and the Black Forest.

Hohenhewen Viewing Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Great panoramic view of the Hegau with its volcanic mountains and castles such as Hohentwiel, Hohenkrähen, etc.
When the weather is nice you can see Lake Constance, the Black Forest, the Baar, the Vosges and the Swiss Alps.
In the event of a thunderstorm, however, you should leave the tower quickly. 😉

Hohenstoffeln Summit

Highlight • Summit

The double summit of Hohenstoffeln impressively shapes the landscape of the Hegau. The southern summit is 832m high, the northern 844m.
The ascent to the Hohenstoffeln can best be done from Hombollhof above Weiterdingens. Another beautiful path leads up from the small hamlet Hofwiesen.
On the Hohenstoffeln are today only the remains of three castle ruins. The largest castle (Hinterstoffeln) was once on the north summit, the castle Vorderstoffeln on the southern summit, and the castle Mittelstoffeln in the saddle of the mountain.
The Hinterstoffeln castle was probably built around the year 1100 by Hegaugrafen Ludwig von Pfullendorf-Ramsberg to Stoffeln on the highest point of the northern summit. The two other castles were later built.
All three castles were first mentioned in 1299. On each of the three castles could live a family. Back and middle cloths were connected to frontal cloths by a wall, on which there were stables and scouring.
All three castles had a common entrance, which was also in the wall. Cistern systems and outlying wells ensured the water supply of the three castles.
Like the castle of the Hohenhewens, the castles of the Hohenstoffeln were destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. The peasants of the area had to drag the remains of the castles in the following, so that today only a few remains of the once proud castles are left.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the mining of basalt began at the northern summit for the use of gravel in road construction. Since 1939, the mountain has been protected, which fortunately prevented further mining.

Nice big cross on top of the hill - a small bench invites you to linger. Nice view over the Hegau cone and with good visibility also of the Alps.

March 7, 2026,3 Hegaugipfel auf einem Streich (Hohenhewen, Hohenstoffeln und Mägdeberg
Spring-like warmth! Sunshine!...and, as a slight drawback, Saharan dust in the air. This means tours with panoramic views can safely be skipped today. Besides, there's no morning fog over Lake Constance for once, so a hike in the immediate vicinity is a perfectly viable option. The Hegau Volcano Tour (hegau.de/_Hegauer_Vulkan_Tour_.290.html) seems like a very attractive idea. It's a complete tour …

The climb up to Hohenhewen is one of the most physically demanding sections on the E1 in Germany. The summit with the castle ruins is actually not touched by the E1. But you definitely have to make the 200 extra meters to the summit, otherwise you won't have a view.

Today I'll start my description with the end of the tour: Within 5 minutes I was back at my starting point. How different is the 5-minute train ride, where you can see some parts of the hike again, from the impressions you get while running! But now from the start: From the train station in Mühlhausen, the path leads me …

A tough stage. Engen is today the starting point and a nice (medieval) town with a piece of city wall. From there towards the first climb on the Hangau Volcano path. That was a solid start, but a nice climb. In the green and on a forest path. At the top you can choose to view a castle. That is …

After the same old rounds of the house all winter, today we went for a proper hike. It was lovely.
