Portsmouth Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Of the original (1180) chapel dedicated to Thomas Becket, only the chancel and transept in early English style survived the Civil War. Around 1690 the nave and the tower were raised. In 1703 an octagonal wooden chapel was added: a landmark for shipping. The aisle of the chancel houses the tomb of the Duke of Buckingham, who was murdered in 1628. Dekerk received cathedral status in 1927 and was further expanded in 1938-1939

Southsea Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Southsea Castle was built in 1544 as part of a series of fortifications constructed by King Henry VIII to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. Soon after the fort was completed, Henry stood inside and watched his flagship, the Mary Rose, sink at the Battle of the Solent against the French in July 1545. These days, the fort is a popular tourist attraction. For more information, visit: southseacastle.co.uk.

South Parade Pier

Highlight • Monument

One of two piers in Portsmouth, South Parade is a classic English pier packed with amusements, food outlets and souvenir shops. It underwent complete renovation in 2017 after having fallen into disrepair and is now a lively place, particularly in the summer. It was originally opened in 1879 and has undergone a rather tumultuous history with fires, innumerable sales and being used as a film location.

Hilsea Lagoon

Highlight • Historical Site

This seawater moat was once part of the defence for the local barracks but now serves as a leisure lake. There's a thin strip of land separating it from Ports Creek and you can walk and cycle between it and the water and this western end. There's a lido next to it on one side and a playing field on the other.

Tipner Lake Waterfront Path

Highlight • Lake

Not really a lake at all but a part of Portsmouth Harbour and Ports Creek, Tipner Lake came into being after a parcel of reclaimed land was built on the north side of Horsea Island. It's a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a wetland conservation zone, thriving with marine and birdlife. There's a traffic-free cycle and footpath along the lake's eastern side and here, next to the Mountbatten Leisure Centre, you can enjoy views across the entirety of the lake. It's tidal, and wrecks are revealed at low tide.
