The lime kilns date to the late 19th century, when limestone and chalk were burnt to produce the cement needed for the expansion of London and the docks. There is evidence of various style kilns in the area, but the most obvious are the flare kiln towers. The towers are now all listed buildings and the area is a nature reserve.

View of Brockham from Box Hill

Highlight • Natural Monument

A strange piece of trivia on Box Hill, along the North Downs Way: a tombstone that reads "Quick, An English Thoroughbred" dating back to the 1940s.

This is, it appears, the final resting place of a Greyhound. Particularly the favourite Greyhound of the wife of the former owner of the land on which the footpath passes nowadays. There is also a nice bench with a view towards the south that offers a nice spot for a short rest or snack break.

From the chalky ridge of Box Hill you can see across to Brockham. The village is well known locally for its Bonfire Night celebrations on 5th November. The whole place is taken over with a huge bonfire, incredible fireworks, a hog roast and thousands of visitors raising money for charity.

May 19, 2025,Section hiking the NDW, part 3: Dorking to Merstham
A bit gnarlier than yesterday with more ups and downs, but you're rewarded with great views when the trees open up.

Easy train access from London make this a great option for us city dwellers.
