Zwart Goor Pond

Highlight • Lake

The pond of 't Zwart Goor...
A very nice idyllic location to dream away from a prince or princess, I don't know.
Keep dreaming... maybe you will see your fantasy become reality in the reflection.
If so, then you ate too many mushrooms...

Historical interpretation:
The former Zwartgoorheide was a swampy area, with five large fens. They were actually swamps from which the peat or 'nut' was extracted, which after drying was burned as peat in the fireplace. Four fens were drained. One fen remained: "the pond of the Zwart Goor".

In 1856 Charles Splingard bought the moors and woods. The Zwart Goor was transformed into a park landscape with villa and avenues. During the First World War the fen was deepened into a large pond.

In 1919, the domain was decorated with decorative concrete buildings on behalf of Martin Verbeeck - director of cement factories. The pond was beautifully constructed as a swimming and rowing pond, with associated changing rooms. In the period after the Second World War, this place was a popular place for all couples to have their wedding photos taken. The pond is now the favorite stopping place of the fishing club of the residents of Service Center 't Zwart Goor.

Feel and explore...

Highlight • Rest Area

Here you will find an educational setup that stimulates the senses.
On the one hand you will feel a small piece with your sweet toes at the bottom of your legs, barefoot. You can toss and turn on the other side of the path, does it feel rough, soft, or smooth?
Take the challenge and experience...

Snoekengracht

Highlight • River

Snoekengracht? Don't be fooled here 😊.
Historical indication:
At the time, almost all monasteries, presbyteries or castles had a pike canal. This was a status symbol. The pike is also an ideal fish for breeding. Many small fish come from one 'nest' and they grow very quickly.

From the presbytery there was a direct path via the pike canal to the 'Pannenhuis' entertainment venue. For example, the traveling judges could greet the pastor from the relaxation area and the pastor's guests could spend the night in the Pannenhuis.

Contours of the Old Rectory

Highlight • Historical Site

Coffee with the pastor...

At this location, the contours give a good impression of the former spacious presbytery, a building with two floors. In addition to the indoor chapel, there were four rooms below and four rooms above, namely a living room, bedrooms, kitchen, back kitchen with moos, a wash house with pump, a baking house and a peat shed.

The Tithe Barn was also located within the ring moat. during the Middle Ages, the inhabitants paid only 10% taxes: the tenth part of the harvest was donated to Monsieur Pastor, a Father White of the Sint-Michielsabdij in Antwerp.
Later the tithe barn formed part of the leased farm, now it is a restaurant 'De Caron'.

A nice location where, with some imagination, you can go for coffee with Mr Pastor within the contours. The picnic bench is ready.

Villa Ter Borght

Highlight • Monument

This gem is a detached eclectic double house, which was built in 1888 as a country residence and hunting pavilion for the Caron family from Turnhout. The family acquired this domain after the French Revolution.
The popular name 'Burcht' refers to the former motte castle as an upper court. From 1155, the presbytery of the Norbertine fathers from the Sint Michielsabdij in Antwerp stood on the lower court with its ring moat. In 1990 the building was sold to the municipality. from November 2001 this building functions as Heemhuis for the Marcblas local history circle.
