This 15th-century church boasts an impressive tower that lords over the nearby mining village of Blidworth. At the heart of the Sherwood Forest region, it has associations with folklore. It is purported that the grave of merry man Will Scarlet can be found in the churchyard.

The Druid Stone

Highlight • Natural Monument

THE DRUID STONE is a natural rock formation with a narrow, manmade passage cut through its centre. It rises anomalously from otherwise gently undulating agricultural land close to the village of Blidworth, Nottinghamshire, in the heart of Sherwood Forest.

Composed of a conglomerate of pebbles and sand bound together with limestone, the Druid Stone, also called the “Altar Stone,” stands over 13 feet (4 metres) high in a field of cows, sheep and alpacas. Formed by an eroded glacial deposit, the monolith dates back thousands of years, possibly used as a Druidical altar, though there’s no evidence to back that up.

Fountain Dale Ponds

Highlight • Forest

Fans of English folklore heed this well, for it was at Fountain Dale where the first meeting of Robin Hood and Friar Tuck took place. Legend goes that they fought at the moat, the remains of which are sadly all but gone.

Interestingly, Sir Walter Scott wrote his famous novel Ivanhoe here. The novel is partly to thank for the modern perception of many of the principal characters of Robin Hood folklore, including the Prince of Thieves himself.
