Only on April 18, 1945 succeeded the 1st Belorussian Front under Commander Marshal Georgi Konstantinowitsch Shukov the decisive breakthrough on the way to Berlin. Already at the beginning of February Shukov's first troops had come from the east over the frozen Oder to entrench themselves on the Reitweiner Sporn. On and in the ridge a vast labyrinth of running and trenches, gun positions as well as command and shelters was created. The centerpiece was a tunnel-like bunker in the shape of a double T.
The entrances to the now endangered Shukov bunker on the Reitweiner Sporn are still visible today, but blocked for safety reasons. Even the command post on the crest of the ridge, from which the coded codeword "siren" triggered the attack in the early morning hours of April 16, 1945, is still recognizable. 22 000 guns flew in a sustained fire in the west, 20 minutes later, 143 Russian anti-aircraft headlights beamed into the Oderbruch battle area. Eyewitnesses reported that the massive, brightly-lit Odern lowlands seemed to waver during this massive artillery strike.
The still dotted with holes and ditches hill is now completely designated as a war memorial and is next to the memorial on the Seelower heights to the main attractions for history-interested tourists in the Oder region.
