The Helm Trig Point

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Helm may be diminutive by Lakeland standards, rising to a modest 607 feet (185 m), but what it lacks in height it makes up for with character. This flat-topped upland is home to native ponies, is the site of an Iron Age hillfort and boasts tremendous views towards the Lake District’s mountains to the north west and the Howgill Fells to the east.

Sedgwick Aqueduct and Village

Highlight • Historical Site

There is an old aqueduct in Sedgwick, which the Lancaster Canal Trail takes you through. If you wish to take the time to explore, the residents of Sedgwick have very helpfully put together a selection of walks and information about the village. This can be found at the bottom of the steps of the aqueduct (bridge) or below

Sedgwick House

Highlight • Historical Site

Sedgwick House was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, and was one of the earliest commissions of the partnership. It was built in 1868 for William Henry Wakefield, who owned a local gunpowder factory. The family moved out of the house shortly before World War II, and it was then used by Lancashire County Council as a school for children with special needs. The school closed in 1987, and the building has since been converted into residential accommodation. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It was designed and turned into apartments and a separate family living space by graphic and interior designer Malcolme Frank Thorburn.
The grounds are used by the local cricket club.

This bridge has now been repaired.
This bridge was originally built for the workers of the Old Sedgwick Gunpowder Works. It allowed them to get to work without having to use the ford or take a large detour. And served as clock-in point. It was closed between 1982 and 1989 as it needed restoration. Floods also damaged the bridge in 2022 and it was closed for repair in August and September of that year.
