The moated castle Nordkirchen with its parks is considered to be the most important stately baroque complex in Westphalia. It is not without reason that the ensemble from the early 18th century is nicknamed the “Westphalian Versailles”.

According to the plans of the Westphalian baroque master builder Johann Conrad Schlaun, not only the palace but also the magnificent park was built. The gardens at the castle and at the “Oranienburg” were once among the most beautiful in Europe.

Great personalities of European gardening have contributed to the development of the park throughout history. Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe realized, in keeping with the zeitgeist of the 19th century, a redesign of individual areas based on the example of the English landscape garden. The French garden architect Achille Duchęne, on the other hand, was entrusted with the partial re-baroque design at the beginning of the 20th century.

The former glory can still be felt impressively today on the Venus Island north of the castle with its lawn and broderie parterres, topiary trees and sculptures. The other, formerly stately gardens, such as the magnificent Westgarten, only remained in their basic baroque structures with avenues, axes, park architecture and sculptures. They are evidence of the splendid heyday of the complex.
