View of Traunstein

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Traunstein is a rugged, 1691 m above sea level. A. high mountain on the east bank of the Traunsee in the district of Gmunden in Austria.

Because of its isolated position in the foothills of the Alps and the walls sloping directly into the lake, it looks like a boulder in the landscape and is therefore a popular photo motif. Its striking silhouette is visible from afar, up to 150 km in clear air. That is why he is often referred to as the state watchman or "guardian of the Salzkammergut".

The Sonnstein Hut is located spectacularly high above Lake Traunsee on the Kleiner Sonnstein. The small hut belongs to the Traunkirchen mountain rescue service and is open on weekends and public holidays from Easter to October. The house is open every day during the Upper Austrian school holidays.

The Sonnstein Hut was built between 1966 and 1968. At that time, tons of building materials were carried up the mountain on foot by helpers. The material cable car has only been in existence since 1979 and supplies the house with food and drinks.

I always stop at the hut for a short rest. For a snack or a cool drink in summer. From the tiny terrace you can enjoy a wonderful view across Lake Traunsee to the striking Traunstein. It is not possible to stay overnight in the hut.

The quickest way to reach the Sonnstein Hut is from the Siegesbach settlement south of Traunkirchen. From Ebensee you should expect a walking time of 2 ½ hours. The steep climb from Ludleben through the summit flank up to the hut requires surefootedness. It takes about 5 minutes from the hut to reach the summit of the Kleiner Sonnstein with its beautiful wooden cross.

August 21, 2021,Sonnenuntergang auf dem "Kleiner Sonnstein"
A tour to the sunset - short and sweet! This is a good way to start your vacation. We have only stayed for almost two weeks in the beautiful Salzburger Land in "Fred's Hut". Numerous hikes and beautiful photo spots are planned - let's see if the weather cooperates.
The tour is of course from yesterday evening - this morning …

I was completely unmotivated and my legs were heavy this afternoon – despite the light rain – but I still managed to get going and hike up to the Kleiner Sonnstein.

At the top, I was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view, and I even saw a chamois – I hadn't expected that at all! 🍀🙏🥾🥰

November 4, 2023,Kleiner Sonnstein
Today we went to the Kleiner Sonnstein. Afterwards we wanted to go to Großer Sonnstein, but the climb was very slippery and the descent would not have been easy and a bit dangerous. So we stayed with Little Sonnstein.

Yesterday I was on the east bank of Lake Traunsee, today the west side was on the agenda.
To my delight, my sons and girlfriends are accompanying me today.🤗😊
Shortly after Traunkirchen, start on the banks of the Traunsee.
The path meanders higher through the forest in many steps and serpentines.
The path then splits in a saddle, straight ahead …

The Kleiner Sonnstein is one of the most popular viewpoints on Lake Traunsee. There are a few parking spaces right at the start of the hiking trail on Federal Highway 145 in Siegesbach, and these quickly fill up.

At the beginning, you have to climb a few steps before the trail leads through a forest. This is followed by a …
