Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

In 1884, the manufacturer Brothers & Co. erected a tall cast-iron lighthouse and two harbor lights at the pier. The two harbor lights still shine today, just as they did then, at the entrance to the old harbor of Stavoren. In 1999, the lighthouse and its associated harbor lights were designated a cultural monument. The lighthouse underwent a complete renovation in 2001.

The lighthouse is still operational today. While it is not open to the public, it can be easily seen from the old harbor.

Hoogland pumping station

Highlight • Monument

The J.L. Hooglandgemaal is an electric pumping station in Stavoren in the Dutch province of Friesland.

The 1966 building with a curved roof was built according to a design by architect Piet de Vries. There are four horizontal screw pumps in the hall. The pumping station discharges water from the Johan Friso Canal as part of the Frisian reservoir onto the IJsselmeer. The pumping station was officially opened on May 10, 1967. It is located south of the Johan Frisosluis. In 2011, after a thorough renovation, the total capacity was increased by more than twenty percent to 7340 m³ per minute.[1]

The Hooglandgemaal took over the task of the other pumping station in Friesland that discharges water into the IJsselmeer, namely the D.F. Woudagemaal in Lemmer. This pumping station now only needs to step in at very high water levels.

After the building was placed on the list of the Reconstruction 1959-1965 protection program in 2013, it was designated as a protected national monument in 2015.

The pumping station is named after PvdA politician Jan Hoogland.
